Teaching kids to identify their feelings is one of the most important parts of their emotional education, and it can be one of the toughest. My 7 year old and 3 year old are working on building that skill. We have read Jennifer Gafford’s Finding Feelings to help with both naming our own feelings and using clues like facial expression and body language to identify how others might be feeling.
The format of this book is so fun- each page has a description of a character’s feelings. Then readers are charged with finding the person who matches that description, using Terri Kelleher‘s expressive images. The last few pages show readers the “answer key”, and ask the readers to consider times when they have felt that way and why. The interactive nature of this book makes it subtly educational, which I love!
