If You Come to Earth by Sophie Blackall is maybe by favorite children’s book of 2020. It’s a totally unique concept with stunning- STUNNING!- images. In it, a kid writes a note to creatures in outer space about what they can expect if they visit Earth. The message starts with broadly describing where Earth is in space and what it’s made of. Eventually the kid describes the inhabitants of Earth. The tone is honest and positive- I especially love the description of the sea (below).
The descriptions of people are also hopeful- sharing what makes us similar and different, what people can and like to do, and how the world is a better place when we’re working together to help one another. I want to live on the Earth described in this book, and I hope that this year will bring us closer to it.
